Glittering Ibis
Plegadis falcinellus

An endangared species that is included in the book "Endangered birds in Europe".

In the last few years between 100 and 700 couples in 5 to 9 colonies were spotted. The biggest colonies can be observed in Bourgas lake and lake Mandra(about 181 in nests 1977 ,this number changing every year).

The ususla habitat for this bird are fresh and semi-salt lakes, swamps with different sizes. Forests that surround a bay and islands on the Danube are also prefered by this species. The feeding areas are often 15 to 20 km distant from the nesting sites.

In Bulgaria it flies for the spring and it nests here. When the little birds cn already fly(about the middle of may) they fly away and wander about the wet lands of the Bulgarian Black sea coast.
